Rani Mukerji

Rani MukerjiRani Mukerji (born March 21, 1978, originally named Rani Mukherjee), is a Indian actress in Bollywood movies                                                                                Family background
She comes from a film-clan family of Bengali origin: Her father, Ram Mukherjee is a retired director. Her mother used to be a playback singer, while her brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer. Bollywood actress Kajol is her second cousin. (See Mukherjee-Samarth family (film))
 .Career
Rani made her debut in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1996. The film did not do well at the box-office. However, Ghulam (1998) brought her instant fame. She was also noticed for her work as a supporting actress in the hit film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), for which she won her first Filmfare Award.
She has appeared in many films since then, a busy schedule typical of the prolific Bollywood movie industry. Although many were run-of-the-mill efforts that were neither commercial nor critical successes, Ms. Mukerji has had her share of higher-profile moments. She played a supporting role in Hey Ram (2000), which was India's official entry to the 2001 Oscars. She had a cameo appearance in the hit Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), and played the female lead in Saathiya (2002), Chalte Chalte (2003), and Hum Tum (2004). She had a strong role as a supporting actress in Veer-Zaara, which was both a commercial hit, and favorably received at the Berlin Film Festival (2005).
Ms. Mukerji's career has gone into high gear in the last few years. In 2005 she appeared in the high-profile films Black, Bunty aur Babli and The Rising. Paheli, while only moderately successful, was India's official entry to the 2006 Oscars.
She is an active performer in many stage shows and participated in Shahrukh Khan's world tour stage show, Temptations 2004 with an all-star lineup.

Trivia
Rani and Saif Ali Khan will be featured performers at the 2006 Commonwealth Games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
She changed her surname from Mukherjee to Mukerji several years ago. At the time, it was reported that she did this for numerological reasons, to increase her luck. Recently, she has claimed that numerology was not a concern; her name had been put down as Mukerji on her passport, and she wished to harmonize her name and her passport.
